Public Relations Lead

Location: Remote

LA Climate Week brings together organizers, partners, volunteers, climate leaders, and communities across Los Angeles. As the Public Relations Lead, you’ll help keep those audiences informed while supporting the media outreach that expands LACW’s reach. It’s about 10 hours a week for six months, fully remote, with additional availability during LA Climate Week.

About the Role

You’ll work alongside the Internal Communications & Public Relations Officer, who leads the overall communications and PR strategy and manages high-level or sensitive relationships. Your part is keeping the day-to-day work moving—from drafting communications and maintaining press lists to tracking coverage, supporting media outreach, and coordinating across the team.

Ways you might contribute

Your focus will shift with current priorities, and you and the Internal Communications & Public Relations Officer can decide where your time is most useful.

  • Communications. Draft community updates, announcements, outreach, and other materials, and help keep communications projects and timelines moving.
  • Media relations. Maintain press lists, draft pitches and routine media responses, identify outreach opportunities, and help with follow-up.
  • Press tracking. Keep an organized record of media coverage and share relevant trends or opportunities with the team.
  • Virtual programming. Help with communications, promotion, registration, and follow-up for virtual events and track how audiences engage.
  • Team coordination. Work with Social Media, Editorial, Data & Operations, and other teams to keep communications, contacts, and opportunities aligned.

You might enjoy this if

You’re a strong writer who enjoys keeping lots of communication threads organized. You’re comfortable interacting professionally with community members, partners, and media contacts and know when something needs extra care or discretion. Experience with PR, journalism, media relations, nonprofit communications, or the Los Angeles climate community is welcome but not required.

What you can expect from us

  • Clear direction. The Internal Communications & Public Relations Officer will provide the communications framework, priorities, and context behind important decisions.
  • Hands-on experience. You’ll build experience with media outreach, press tracking, organizational communications, and virtual programming.
  • Room to contribute. You’ll have space to bring ideas and judgment to the day-to-day work while operating within the broader communications strategy.
  • Experience you can use. You can document appropriate communications materials, outreach, coverage, and programming work for your portfolio, and CF leadership can provide a professional reference upon completion.
  • Accommodations. If a change in scheduling, communication format, or another aspect of the role would help you participate, tell us, and we’ll work with you.

Los Angeles County is home to many communities, and our communications are stronger when the people helping shape them reflect that range. If you’re a person of color, disabled, LGBTQ+, or part of another community underrepresented in nonprofit communications and public relations, we’d especially like to hear from you.

Time and terms

  • Time. About 10 hours a week for approximately six months, with flexible scheduling.
  • Location. Fully remote and largely async, with a weekly 45–60 minute check-in with the Internal Communications & Public Relations Officer.
  • LA Climate Week. During April 2–12, 2027, additional availability will be helpful for media and communications support. We’ll plan for that period together in advance.

This is an unpaid volunteer role reporting to the Internal Communications & Public Relations Officer. You give your time freely, with no expectation of pay now or in the future. It is not employment and not a pathway to a paid position.
