Come get your hands dirty with Garden School Foundation at our next Community Garden Day on Saturday, April 11th from 9 am-12 pm! We are excited for this special Earth Month event that will feature a nature journaling workshop and DIY nature journal decorating! All ages are welcome and no experience is required.
Why:
As a GSF volunteer, you’ll play an indispensable role in maintaining our cherished school garden at an elementary school in South LA.
Who:
Garden School Foundation provides in-depth garden-based education to youth at Title I schools in Los Angeles, strengthening connections between food justice, environmental stewardship, and community health. By using the full transformative potential of school gardens as teaching sites, we nurture a healthy and mindful generation of children who care for their bodies, their communities, and the earth. We currently serve eleven Title I elementary schools, reaching over 3,800 students and their families each year.
What to Expect:
Together you’ll work alongside GSF staff and school families to weed the garden, refresh mulch pathways, harvest, plant seedlings, and more! We will also be having a special Earth Month nature journaling workshop. After a morning of hard work and good vibes, we’ll share a light lunch together (provided by our partners at Sprouts).
What’s Required:
-Volunteers of all ages and experience levels, from beginning to Master Gardener, are welcome.
-We provide all the tools and training. All you need to join in is a desire to help out and a willingness to learn.
-Volunteers should wear close-toe shoes and loose, comfy clothes that are school-appropriate.
-We encourage volunteers to bring their own water bottles and sun protection.
-There is free onsite parking in a lot directly next to the garden (enter from E Century Blvd).
-GSF will have a table set up in front of the school where we will check you in and ask you to sign our Volunteer Waiver.
-We will be in the garden rain or shine!
-Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian 18+ years of age.
-Our garden beds are ADA-compliant and parts of the garden are accessible to wheelchairs. Most of the pathways for the central garden are mulch.
