International Zero Waste Day (March 30) is a United Nations-recognized day that spotlights the global waste crisis – and the shift we urgently need toward smarter consumption, stronger local systems, and a circular economy. It’s not just a “trash problem.” Waste – and in particular, FOOD WASTE- is a climate, health, and community issue. So on Saturday, March 28th, we will pause and reflect – and then we’ll do what matters most: learn, share practical tools, and take action we can actually sustain.
Why: Join us for a workshop that explores the full journey of food waste—what happens when food is wasted, where it goes, and how our everyday choices at home can make a real difference. Together, we will look at the many pathways food can take (including composting) and why each step matters for our communities, our environment, and our wallets. You’ll learn practical ways to reduce waste at home, including getting more meals out of the food you already have, so your food dollars go further. We’ll also cover simple composting tips as one part of the bigger picture, helping make food waste feel less overwhelming and more manageable. This workshop is all about seeing food differently—not as something to throw away, but as something with value at every stage.
Who: This hands-on education event helps Angelenos understand food waste reduction strategies and community-powered solutions that move us toward a zero-waste future. This is a FAVE Family monthly event that welcomes all families with activities suitable for kids of all ages. (Please email fave@laworks.com to add on children who do not have their own L.A. Works account)
What to Expect:
A welcoming, interactive learning session (no food/food waste knowledge needed)
Complete a service project making spice racks for formerly unhoused individuals moving into housing so they can cook at home (making their food dollars stretch further) in their own kitchen!
Leave with confidence, clarity, and a real sense of momentum for International Zero Waste Day.
